What’s the Difference Between a Website, Webpage, and Landing Page?
Learn how they differ and why it matters for building your online presence.
Tech Wing Bites: What is a Website?
Who are you? That’s the question your visitors are asking when they visit you online. A website is like a collection of pages of different types; it’s your digital home. It’s the space where people come to learn about you, your business, or your interests. And the best part? It’s open 24/7, giving visitors a chance to get a full understanding of who you are.
My Digital Address
Just like your physical home address, your website has one too; it’s called a Domain, sometimes referred to as the “website address.” Think of it like this: you’re on the World Wide Web (www), the internet, the cloud. It’s a web, like a spider web, and your domain, you know your website, it’s the spider.
And just like a spider has many legs, your website has pages. Each page has a different purpose and might include images, videos, or even links to other spiders; uh, I mean, websites.
Are you on the Web?
A Collection of Pages: A website brings together multiple pages under one domain spider/ name (example: www.example.com). Each leg / page, such as home page, landing page, about us page, contact us page, etc. all together is your website.
Purpose-Driven: Websites has many page types, the two most popular is your “Home Page” — If you didn’t select a leg, you land here. And “Landing Page” — Each one of these may have a different purpose but they all have the following format:
“Who am I?”
“What I do?”
“Visitor: Go Here, do something”
Accessible Anywhere: As long as you have internet, you can visit a website from a phone, tablet, or computer.
Interactive Spaces: Many websites allow users to engage; think likes, commenting, re-shares, shopping, chatting & of course posting.
A Digital Identity: For businesses, it’s the face of your brand online; for individuals, it’s a way to showcase talents, share ideas, or stay connected.
Not to be confused with “My webpage”
Your website is like a storefront with flashy lights, spinning arrows, and people outside waving signs saying, “Come in!” To invite people to your store, you’ll need to give them the address (the domain). If you don’t tell them where to go, they’ll come through the front door (the Home Page). They’ll then visit and be wowed by what they see outside enough to come in to enjoy the look and feel (the design). What you’re selling will be beautifully set up with all the information they need to make a purchase (the content), along with a smooth customer experience, with people waiting to answer your questions and signs (the navigation). Sometimes, though, you might want to target a specific group with a particular marketing campaign. That’s when you ask them to come through a special door or line (Landing Pages) designed just for that offer.
Understand the differences?
Today, many FREE service offers ways to allow you to get an online presence: from Wix, WordPress, Squarespace. But remember after you have your collection of pages, you’ll need to put them somewhere, yep on your domain; that’s where hosting comes in, but we’ll talk about that later.
SquareSpace does great at breaking this down if you’re a DIY.
