Tech Wing Bites: What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Why is it that when you search something on the internet, your first results tend to be a post, notes, website, or video that is unrelated? Why not yours? The secret recipe? Paid Ads…but also, SEO!
The SEO Cake
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of making your content more visible to people searching online. Their search words become “key,” and optimization means finding the right key-words to match the results. Then boom—you rank higher in the search engine! This applies to any online sources that allow you to search, like Social Media—TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, etc. and Search Engines—Google, Bing, or one of my favorites, DuckDuckGo.
The Ingredients
Content Is King
Know your content. I know you’ve heard that before. Make it valuable, relevant, and engaging—then optimize. Know your audience. Know your product or service. Once you do that, you’ll find your flavorful keywords.Human Experience (UX)
The “U” is for User—You knew that, right? We optimize content for search engines, it’s the SE in SEO—but don’t forget, real people are visiting too. They’ll see those keywords, which need to make sense. Make sure your UX (User Experience) is on point: fast-loading, easy-to-navigate, well-structured, and packed with helpful content (…and keywords). Happy visitors stick around—and they’ll tell other visitors. The O in Optimize
Optimization begins with keywords, ok—but that’s not all. It’s also about getting under the hood of your website for speed, making sure it can be viewed pretty on mobile, and having your content structure grab visitors attention. Referencing your friends’ content—backlinks, is another part of the “O”. Finally sprinkle “YOUR” keywords all over your masterpiece.
Baking SEO in Substack
So you’ve got a blog or newsletter, right? You’ve been posting regularly and want more organic visitors. You scan your site for keyword density—how many times x keywords show up. Take the top keywords and use them a few more times in your next post. When search engines crawl your newsletter, they’ll see your awesome content matches those keywords. Next time someone searches for one of those keywords, your newsletter pops up. 😊Yay!!! 👏🏾 for optimizing for the search engine—and users!
Keep Trying
Although paid ads are a large factor to gaining visibility—and now Ai is stepping into this space, it’s important more than ever now to keep optimizing your content! It’ll still be the key to climbing rankings and attracting more visitors, even in 2025 & beyond (yep, I’m looking way ahead). Did I lose you?
