Your Digital ID: How the Internet Knows It’s You.
Your IP address is your online ID—here’s a bite
Tech Wing Bites: What is an IP?
We all have ID’s, including every computer that is on the internet—even in your home. This is possible by the IP ID—which we call your IP Address.
Your Internet Security Number
IP, is short for Internet Protocol, is the internet’s addressing system. It makes sure the data you request gets to the right place—and act like a digital GPS for your device.
IP Basics
Every Device Has an IP Address 🏷️
Just like every house has a mailing address, every device connected to the internet gets an IP address.IP Routes Information
IP figures out the best route for data to travel across large networks—hopping from router to router until it reaches the right destination.2 Types: IPv4 and IPv6 🔢
IPv4 looks like this:
192.168.1.1(most common)IPv6 looks like this:
2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334(created because we were running out of addresses! )
You Use It Everyday
When you visit a website or an app, your device sends a request— “hey, I’m over here” the IP then tells the internet where to send that request and where to return the response. Whether you're sending an email, streaming Netflix or scrolling social—IP is silently making sure everything goes where it should.
Always There
So next time you hit “send” or load a page, remember: there’s a smart little system making sure your data knows exactly where to go.
Fun Fact: There are over 4 billion IPv4 addresses—and we still ran out. That’s why IPv6 had to step in with trillions more!
